Kirsty Craig Associates - career coaching

What is career outplacement and why consider it?

Career outplacement is a support service for departing employees to help them be as skilled as possible in finding their next opportunity following redundancy.

It includes practical advice such as the different ways to job search, how to interview effectively and tips on making their CV compelling reading for potential employers, as well personalised coaching to help them understand what the right sort of opportunity for their particular skill set and experience looks like.

Letting go of employees is never a pleasant experience, but by providing career coaching you are making the redundancy experience as positive as possible.

So here are 5 good reasons why you should consider offering an Outplacement Service as part of your redundancy process:

  1. Providing the right support

People are your most important asset and even when they are leaving your business under terms that neither of you can necessarily control, you want it to be a positive and supportive experience.

Through career outplacement, departing employees can move on much more quickly (in many cases up to 50% faster) with the right support, so making the transition to their next role much easier.

2. It empowers redundant employees

Redundancy is a difficult and stressful time for anyone. Some departing employees may not have entered the job market for several years – which can be incredibly daunting without the right help and guidance.

By fully supporting exiting employees, you can demonstrate both to them and to those who remain, that you value them as individuals and are committed to helping them to move forward quickly and positively.

3. Supports a strong employer brand

Your employer brand helps to attract and retain the best talent…which in turn helps your business to thrive and achieve its goals and objectives.

Disgruntled employees who are leaving, may post negative reviews about you on social media, or speak negatively of you to other businesses if they are not fully supported when they leave…and a poor reputation sticks.

Properly supporting your departing employees through Outplacement demonstrates that their contribution to your business has been valued; it helps them to leave with positive feelings about you as an employer, protecting your brand and reputation – both of which cannot be underestimated.

4. Risks outweigh the cost

Costs are always are a key consideration – especially where redundancies are concerned, but when you outweigh the risks of low productivity, low morale and a damaged employer reputation against the small cost involved in using our Careers Outplacement Service, it more than pays for itself.

5. Creates security for those staying

It’s not just departing employees who feel the pressure when being redundant. Those who are staying can be deeply affected and their performance can suffer as a result as they worry about what’s going to happen to them in the future.

So knowing that their colleagues are fully supported as they look for and secure their next role successfully, will help to reassure everyone that you are doing all you can to offer practical support during what can be a tricky period.
